16th & 17th January 2003. Plymouth, Devon, UK

The National Conference for Student Progression and Transfer was a national conference exploring current issues relating the transfer of top up or direct entry students into Higher Education, with a specific focus on the experience of HND students moving into stages 2 or 3 of a degree programme. The conference explored the following issues:

Student Progression from FE to HE - the importance of Partnerships: Why do partnerships work - why are they important? The University of Plymouth has one of the largest partnership networks in the UK. This session will explore the importance of good partnerships between colleges and Universities to help recruitment, retention and overall student experience.

Embedding progression strategies in HE and FHE. There is a wide variety of good practice which can help the transfer and progression of direct entry students into HE. This session will highlight examples of good practice in progression and transfer which has been embedded into courses, modules or support programmes.

Employability and Transferability. In order for students to transfer from FE to HE and then onto employment, there is a need for clear, planned progression routes (where FE HE and employers all work together) and for students to understand and evaluate their own skill levels.

Bridging the cultural divide: recognising different types of learning environments. The Higher Education learning environment can present a new and challenging experience for direct entry students who have experienced a different and often more formal environment.
